Presentation in Kent planned on education, race

A forum on education and race will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 in person in Kent and on Zoom.

The forum is titled "Education and Race: Part 2, Teacher Perspectives," and is sponsored by the Kent Interfaith Alliance for Racial Reconciliation and Justice. It will take place at Hobbs Hall, behind the Unitarian Universalist Church, 228 Gougler Ave. in Kent.

The event is a follow-up to a presentation on education and race from administrator perspectives, which the group sponsored in November.

Panelists will include Joseph Shaw, a retired middle school teacher; Christie Bates and Susan Lewis, teachers at Holden Elementary School in Kent; and Curtis Black, a coach at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent.

Parents, mature students and educators can listen to and pose questions to current and retired teachers about their experiences related to race in the classroom setting.  Topics will include obstacles in educating children about racism, empowering children against racism, the messages children receive from the media and society, and talking to children in the classroom about the connection between history and contemporary racial issues.
