Jalen Hurts leads Eagles to 24-20 win over Cowboys in game marred by fights, weather
19, Jun 2026The 2025 NFL season started with players taking offense, then the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys playing unstoppable offense. It ended with two elements unseen during the first half — lightning and defense.
Reigning NFL champion Philadelphia endured a one-hour weather delay and a stiff challenge from Dallas before prevailing, 24-20, on the new season’s opening night.
The teams combined for seven drives in the first half, and each resulted in points as the Eagles took a 21-20 halftime lead with both Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and his Eagles counterpart, Jalen Hurts, seemingly in midseason form.
Prescott was involved in one of the game’s biggest plays, which occurred just six seconds into the first quarter when he appeared to spit in the vicinity of Eagles defensive star Jalen Carter after the opening kickoff. Carter then spit back and was ejected for the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, removing one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive linemen from the middle of an Eagles defense that is the youngest in the league.
NBC Sports analyst Jason Garrett, a former Cowboys head coach, said that in a conversation after the game, Prescott called the incident a "misunderstanding." Prescott, Garrett said, claimed he had been talking to his Dallas linemen in the huddle and needed to spit over a lineman's shoulder, and Carter asked, "'Are you spitting at me?' Dak said, 'Why would I spit at you?' And [Carter] got closer, and he spit back at him."
Lightning in the vicinity of the stadium forced a 64-minute delay with four minutes left in the third quarter, and the teams did not resume play until 11:30 p.m. ET.
When the game returned, the unstoppable offenses of the first half disappeared. There were eight drives and just three points during the final two quarters, including five consecutive punts. An Eagles punt late in the fourth quarter gave the Cowboys a chance to score a go-ahead touchdown. But drops by star receiver CeeDee Lamb led to a turnover on downs, and Philadelphia ran out the game clock as the season's opening night spilled over into morning.
Prescott completed 21 of his 34 passes for 188 yards. Lamb finished with seven receptions and 110 yards on 13 targets.
Hurts rushed for 62 yards, including two touchdowns, and threw for 152 yards with only four incompletions. The Cowboys, playing in first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer’s debut and only one week after having traded superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons, looked little like the team that finished last season 7-10 as it held Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley to 60 yards, though he did score a touchdown.

Dallas will be without former star pass rusher Micah Parsons
Four weeks after Micah Parsons asked for a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, only for the team’s owner to say he was not interested in granting such a request, the team agreed to deal the star pass rusher in a stunning trade with the Green Bay Packers just one week before the start of the NFL season.
In Green Bay, Parsons will earn the contract extension he had sought from Dallas, which had led to his trade request. The Packers have agreed to a four-year, $188 million extension with Parsons, 26, according to David Mulugheta, his agent — a contract that makes Parsons the NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback. Of the $188 million, $136 million is fully guaranteed, according to Athletes First, the agency that represents Parsons.
In return, the Cowboys will get a 2026 first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick and Pro Bowl DT Kenny Clark.

FanDuel helps restore express train service for Eagles season opener
The sports gambling company FanDuel provided $80,000 to restore express train service for the Philadelphia Eagles' season opener tonight, SEPTA confirmed with NBC Philadelphia.
The Eagles issued a travel advisory Tuesday informing fans they would not be running their special sports express trains for the matchup against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field because of SEPTA’s ongoing service cuts.
The Eagles advised fans to travel to the South Philadelphia Sports Complex only if they had tickets to the game and told those who were attending to arrive early and plan for extra travel time.
Yesterday, however, FanDuel announced it was providing resources to fully restore express train service on SEPTA’s Broad Street Line for the season opener.

History not on Philadelphia's side
The Eagles won their first Super Bowl in the 2017 season (they went 13-3 and beat New England in the Super Bowl). The following year, they went 9-7 and lost in the divisional round of the playoffs.
No NFC team has gone to back-to-back Super Bowls since the Seahawks in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Before Seattle, the previous NFC team to reach back-to-back Super Bowls was the Green Bay Packers in the 1996 and 1997 seasons. Dallas was the last NFC team to win back-to-back Super Bowls, in the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

This afternoon, sunshine and a gusty southerly wind will push temps into the mid-80s.
The afternoon winds are coming ahead of a cold front that’s already pushing showers toward central Pennsylvania, and the wet weather is on track to arrive in Philadelphia during tonight’s game.
There is a low chance of severe weather, but isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging winds aren’t out of the question.
At this time, the stronger storms look likelier to occur west of Philadelphia than in the city.

Cowboys-Eagles an all-time great NFL rivalry
The Cowboys and the Eagles dominated the NFC East in recent years, combining to win each of the last four and eight of the last nine division titles (Washington won the division in 2020). Each of the last two times the Eagles won the division (2022 and 2024), they went on to reach the Super Bowl.
No team has won back-to-back NFC East titles since the Eagles won four straight from 2001 to 2004. The current 20-year run without a repeat division winner is the longest such streak in NFL history among any division.
The Eagles won both games against the Cowboys last season, sweeping Dallas for the first time since the 2011 season. They dominated in both wins, outscoring the Cowboys 75-13 (a 34-6 win in Dallas in Week 10 and a 41-7 win in Philadelphia in Week 17).

Cowboys looking to rebound in 2025
The Cowboys’ 2024 season was the exact opposite of the Eagles', with Dallas going 7-10 and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020 as quarterback Dak Prescott missed the final nine games with a hamstring injury.
Head coach Mike McCarthy was not retained after the season and was replaced by Brian Schottenheimer, who was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach (this will be Schottenheimer’s first season as a head coach at any level).

Eagles back in action after winning last year's Super Bowl
The Eagles are coming off arguably their best season in history, tying the franchise record with 14 regular season wins in 2024 before dominating in the playoffs and beating the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX for the franchise’s second Super Bowl title.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts was named Super Bowl MVP, running back Saquon Barkley was named Offensive Player of the Year (leading the NFL with 2,005 rushing yards), and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s unit ranked first in the NFL in total defense.
